    The beginning of Windows Live ID

    Welcome to the Windows Live ID team blog!  This is our inaugural “Hello World!” post to introduce Windows Live ID.
     
    Windows Live ID is the upgrade/replacement for the Microsoft Passport service and is the identity and authentication gateway service for cross-device access to Microsoft online services, such as Windows Live, MSN, Office Live and Xbox Live.  Is this the authentication service for the world?  No :-)  It's designed for use with Microsoft online services and by Microsoft-affiliated close partners who integrate with Windows Live services to offer combined innovations to our mutual customers.  We will continue to support the Passport user base of 300+ Million accounts and seamlessly upgrade these accounts to Windows Live IDs.  Partners who have already implemented Passport are already compatible with Windows Live ID.
     
    Windows Live ID is being designed to be an identity provider among many within the Identity Metasystem.  In the future, we will support Federated identity scenarios via WS-* and support InfoCards.
     
    For developers we will be providing rich programmable interfaces via server and client SDKs to give third party application developers access to authenticated Microsoft Live services and APIs.
     
    Over the next few weeks as we complete our deployment, you will see the Windows Live ID service come alive through our respective partners sites and services.  The first thing you’ll notice as early as today is that the word Passport is being replaced by Windows Live ID.  But it isn't a rebranding exercise -- there is stuff going on under the hood.  This will be more understandable in the coming weeks and months when you start seeing the new, exciting Windows Live sign-in UI.  Not only is the page load time significantly reduced, but you will see some really cool innovative features that we’re sure you’ll love :)
     
    What do you need to do as a consumer?  Nothing!  Just keep logging into your Windows Live and MSN services as you normally do.  Or try out some new ones at ideas.live.com.  
     
    We'll be sharing more about Windows Live ID here as it rolls out...for all those interested in identity and authentication service, come on back.  And let us know what you think!

    ok guys, i think i have a SOLUTION, im thinking, the problem is safari, so lets download firefox and access the internet with that instead. cuz my friend has a Mac and he dowladed firefox, and he has no trouble at all. there MAY STILL BE HOPE!!!!

    What a good feeling that I'm not alone. I have not been able to "directly" sign into my Hotmail account since the fall. I did find a work-around, albeit annoying... I launch Windows Live ID Sign-in site first @ https://accountservices.passport.net/, login using my hotmail user account and password then open http://www.hotmail.com and my user id and password is "retained" and gives me access to my hotmail acct. Goodluck!

    i agree with the windows live thing for macs. This basically sucks and if it's not going to be fixed then i'll have to revoke my account as well. i hope the mastermind at hotmail that came up with this idea gets a big frown at his next top corporate meeting.

    I would give my e-mail address, but as it no longer works then it would be pretty hard. I have had msn mail for 9 years, stuff them and microsoft and HP can take that running jump as well. I have recently got a mac - the only people / program / drivers or applications that have been consistently poor of unhelpful has been Microsoft or HP. Will this force we back to windows, NO because Vista is the biggest pile of steaming turd i have ever used, you are all unhelpful idiots that need to get over yourselfs.

    I give my corporate e-mail since I can't access hotmail from my mac. I will drop hotmail this weekend if this continues. The person who did this forces me to sell msft. They are hiring people who don't see the big picture.

    I've been having problems accessing my hotmail for about 3 weeks now at this stage - I end up being able to access it by allowing the error message to load then going into the "get a new hotmail account" button and somehow i'm bumped into my page. Weird. I also have a yahoo address and a gmail address - why are they making it so hard for Mac users when there's so much choice out there???

    I'm also fed up and have switched my 12 year old Hotmail account to Gmail. We just got an iMac and I didn't realize Windows Live would make it impossible to check my email consistently. I'm not jumping through hoops for that. Get a clue, Windows Live. You better get with the program and start to work with the Mac set up.

    I'm fed up with Microsoft's Windows Live ID.  I havent been able to check my email for several weeks now. I do important businesss with my hotmail account and now I have to run to somebody else computer or log in at work to check my enails. Maybe Microsoft need to figure out what they really want to do with Windows Live ID, Its not working and its a big headache.

    I'm another malcontent...I haven't been able to access my hotmail from my MacBook for about two weeks. Prior to that access was inconsistent...I'd been trying to hang on, be patient. My patience has worn thin. I've had hotmail for years and didn't want to change accounts for that reason.....everyone has my hotmail address. But I use my hotmail everyday, usually multiple times per day. I'm fed up with needing to run to another computer, or borrow someone else's computer to access my email. It's gone beyond ridiculous....I can't help but think this is just another way to discriminate against Mac users. Well, you're losing another customer. We love our Macs, so I'll go to a Gmail or Comcast account.......can't use Notmail, but I'll need to go to another computer to do my account switching, because "you can't get there from here!"

    I don't know why! I have got a Mac laptop but We have got PC for the other room. I signed Window Live ID no problem. My ID no is 0001620161D6B5BE from this early morning. Thanks Annabelle

    Windows Live ID totally bites AZZ!!  
     
    I cannot roam my hard drive while offline!!  I want to remove this crap from my system and I cannot find any reasonable means to do so. 
     
    So a complete system restore (roll back to manufacture settings) is not a reasonable solution!

    In all seriousness I need to be able to get to my emails! I pay for hotmail plus and am currently investigating the possibility of legal action as I am paying for a service that continues to be faulty. Does anyone know if there is a way of sorting this out? Is there even anyone at microsoft that can be contacted to discuss the problem? The whole thing is a total disgrace!

    Same.. I have a Mac and this weird switch to windows live ID seems to have messed up my log in as I can now only sporadically get into my hotmail for some unknown reason!? It does that rolling 4 addresses thing and keeps sending me to the 'sign up' page (which i've done) and encourages me to upgrade my microsoft web browser which I cannot do because I have safari. I pay for hotmail plus as well thus making it even more annoying! Maybe gmail is the way forward!? If anyone from microsoft reads this I hope your bosses realise that theyre going to start losing a lot of users! .. or how's about you do some work and SORT IT OUT!!!

    This was also my first account. I got it in 1999 before I went away for college. I also have a Mac, and will be switching. I am very tired of the intolerance Microsoft continually shows to there competition. Something that I will eventually be the end of people putting up with there products... which are total crap.

    "Windows Live ID is unavailable from this site" AGAIN! It happens at least 3 times out of 4. I've been on Hotmail for 11 years but GMAIL hear I come.
